Description
Fertility (2006)
The piece shows numerous fertility dolls with hopeful faces. In African legend, the bearer of a fertility doll carving will give birth to a beautiful child 24 inches tall. In Ghana and in most parts of Africa, fertility dolls represent youth and fruitfulness.
The painting features linear dolls on a vivid background. Shaped as crosses, they are linked to the Ancient Egyptians who used a similar symbol to represent life. With a huge round head and distinctive body it is uniquely made to represent a woman's womb. The round head illustrates the Ashanti regions' concept of beauty. The high oval forehead is achieved by massaging an infant's soft skull; a small mouth; and a neck ringed to depict creases by fat, indicating a healthy diet.
This symbol has stood the test of time, even before we knew how babies were actually made, we knew that our existence depended on the renewal of fertility.
